Would you spend $5 and take 5 minutes to protect your child’s safety in your home? This is how simple it is to protect your family from tragedy from tipped-over furniture.

Every 30 minutes, a child in the U.S. is injured by furniture that has tipped over, and two-thirds of TV and furniture tip-over fatalities involve toddlers. Preventing these accidents is easy and inexpensive. The Anchor It! campaign is the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) call to action to educate parents and caregivers about these dangers in the home. Their aim is to lessen these numbers by providing parents with the resources they need to protect their children.

Many parents may not think about these dangers, as they may have already made an effort to childproof their home. However, a TV can fall with the force of thousands of pounds. That is 10 times more powerful than being hit by a NFL lineman.

On their website, the CPSC has useful resources on how to prevent injuries, like this guide on how to anchor your heavy furniture and TVs. Their list of guidelines include:

  • Using sturdy furniture
  • Anchoring or mounting TVs to the wall
  • Following the manufacturer’s instructions to secure TVs and furniture properly
  • Securing top-heavy furniture with inexpensive anti-tip brackets
  • Removing tempting objects, like toys and remotes, from the tops of TVs or furniture

By following these simple steps, you can protect your children from one of the top hidden hazards in the home!
