As a mother, your number one priority is keeping your baby safe, happy and healthy. But, did you know that some of the products advertised to keep your baby’s skin soft and smooth can actually be dangerous? We made a list of all of the ingredients that can be harmful to your little one’s health and what you should watch out for on your next shopping trip!

Proplyene glycol: This harmful ingredient is sometimes found in baby wipes, as it helps to absorb liquids. This chemical is also found in antifreeze and can cause skin irritation if children are exposed to a high concentration, not to mention its toxicity if accidentally consumed.

Vitamin A & Oxybenzone: What? Vitamin A? While this vitamin is usually beneficial on its own, both of these ingredients can be harmful if used in sunscreens. A study by the National Toxicology Program suggests that retinyl palmitate, a form of vitamin A, may actually speed up the development of skin tumors and lesions if skin is exposed to sunlight. Oxybenzone has been linked to endometriosis and reproductive problems.

1, 4-Dioxane & Ethylated Surfactancts: These ingredients are more difficult to spot, as they are chemical by-products and are not listed on labels. They can cause skin allergies and skin toxicity. To avoid them, stay away from ingredients like sodium laureth sulfate, PEG compounds and chemicals listed as Xynol, Ceteareth and Oleth.

Talc: This ingredient is frequently added to baby powder and other powder cosmetics. Talc used to be linked to cancer when it was contaminated with asbestos years ago, and today is a lung irritant and may also contain carcinogens.

Mineral Oil: Mineral oil is a key ingredient in baby oil and is derived from petroleum. This ingredient prevents your baby’s skin from breathing and releasing toxins. Furthermore, if ingested, mineral oil can cause serious illness.

Parabens & Phthalates: Parabens and phthalates are used as preservatives and can be found in a large number of shampoos, body washes, soaps, and other products. They are toxins that have been linked to cancer, endocrine disruption, reproductive problems, allergies and asthma.

Triclosan: Triclosan is usually found in products labeled antibacterial, but can actually be harmful to your baby’s health and the environment. The use of antibacterial products increases microbial resistance and makes it harder to fight germs when we need to. Regular soap and water will do the job!

Formaldehyde: This ingredient is sometimes added to products as a preservative, as it prevents products from molding. Formaldehyde has been linked to increasing allergy symptoms, including headaches, nausea and respiratory issues.

You can avoid these ingredients by looking for a hypoallergenic product. You can count on MD Moms. Our products use only pure, effective ingredients that are gentle enough for sensitive skin but effective enough to treat the most irritated skin conditions.
